In a time of so much hardship, it is easy to feel despair. I recently watched an interview with author John Green who spoke of his own despair as a daily presence he has to ward off with all the magic and meaning that he can find. Green is the author of the nonfiction book Everything is Tuberculosis. It is the story of a curable disease that is still the leading cause of death around the world. While science and medicine have made huge strides to treat this illness, human systems of inequity and oppression continue to kill over a million people each year.
This is not a happy story; and yet the author sheds light on a fundamental truth: that hope is a choice and an action that lies within our hearts and hands. I will share more about this in this week’s Sunday reflection….
In this season of Advent, I am making it a daily practice to notice and write about, and to create hope. From rising early to watch the birds, to gathering on blustery Mondays to bear moral witness outside the courthouse, to simple acts of human kindness – from donuts to poetry to rides – we share with one another. Hope is everywhere if we choose to notice it. And to be it.
In peace and hope for the season,
Rev. Terri
My Schedule this Week…
All are welcome to join for lunch in the community room on Wednesday, December 10, 12:30 -1:30 PM- for sharing time and a meal together, and conversation about interests, current events, hobbies, etc. And stop by our open sanctuary anytime for a day of reflection and labyrinth meditation on Thursday, December 11th from 12-8 PM. The day will include a facilitated circle from 4-5:30 PM for all who may be experiencing sadness or stress this holiday season.
I extend a special invitation to our newcomers to this Sunday’s Community Conversation on Choosing Hope at 11:45 AM, and to meet with me individually if you are interested in Membership. The best way to learn about Unitarian Universalism is to live it– and all of our circles include reflections on our UU faith and values. Some (such as the first Sunday circles) also include reflection on UU History and Theology.
Private appointments can be made via my calendly. I can meet by phone or Zoom on other days of the week.
