During our current congregational year, we have filled the UUC buildings and grounds with love and purpose. In just six months, our property has taken center stage for our minister, membership and social justice teams to create a safe downtown space for broader community connections and for our UUC youth to collect food for immigrants in our community. We have hosted tag sales, weekly meditation, game nights, potluck dinners, fiber arts gatherings, a benefit concert, the Cocoa Caper, and 21 Sunday services—plus more! Through our partnerships with Inspirica and Play to Learn, we continue to provide affordable housing and child day care, extending our mission into everyday lives. Each of these events brings warmth and connection, and each one depends on a space that is clean, safe and welcoming.
Behind the scenes, a small but mighty Buildings & Grounds committee has been hard at work. Together, we’ve organized a fall clean-up day, had the gutters and office carpets cleaned, kept the grass cut and weeds cleared, painted the sanctuary doors and met with multiple contractors to test for mold and air quality and plan critical repairs to the RE building roof and the Metcalf House porch. Our Board of Trustees is actively working on solutions for ongoing pest control needs, and our Administrator continues to juggle countless day-to-day challenges—from mitigating leaks and restoring heat to coordinating the needs of current and prospective renters.
As we move into the new year, our to-do list keeps growing. One of our next projects is restoring one of our historic pew benches—another step in preserving the beauty and safety of the space we all cherish.
This is where you come in.
Buildings & Grounds work is meaningful, tangible, and deeply appreciated, yet under funded —and many hands truly make the work lighter.
Our next Buildings & Grounds committee meeting will be held Tuesday, January 27th, from 6:00–7:30 pm in the Community Room. Everyone is welcome. Whether you have handy skills, good ideas, or simply a willingness to help, there’s a place for you at the table.
Come roll up your sleeves with us and be part of caring for the space that cares for all of us.
Wishing all of you warmth through the winter months and a very Happy New Year!
